Moira O’Bryan is a professor and the Dean of the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Prof O’Bryan’s research encompasses sperm development and function, genetic and environmental causes of human infertility, contraception and the implications for ‘reproductive’ proteins on health broadly.

She directs a multidisciplinary and highly collaborative research program covering discovery research, device development, and clinical medicine. She has held significant leadership roles within Australian and international fertility professional societies. She is a founding member of the International Male Infertility Genomics Consortium which aims to define genetic causes of male infertility and improve their diagnosis, and the Male Reproductive Health Initiative which aims to improve access to, and the quality of, treatment options for men and their partners. She is a core member of the Gates Foundation funded non-hormonal contraceptive project which aims to develop non-hormonal contraceptives for use by women in low resource settings. She has received research-based awards from numerous agencies including the NHMRC, the Australian Academy of Science, the Fertility Society of Australia, the Endocrine Society of Australia, and the Society for Reproductive Biology (SRB), the American Society of Andrology, the Society for Reproduction and Fertility, UK. She is a fellow of SSR and SRB in recognitions of outstanding contributions to the field of reproductive biology. In addition, she has held numerous awards, and held numerous leadership roles, related to improving diversity, equity and inclusion.  

In her role as Dean, Prof O’Bryan directs a large faculty delivering >20 courses spanning physics, chemistry, life and ecological sciences, veterinary sciences, agriculture, mathematics, geosciences and geography. In addition, she is the custodial Dean of the Bio21 Molecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute, the Melbourne Energy Institute, the Indigenous Knowledge Institute, the Oceania Institute and The Melbourne Biodiversity Institute. She is well known for her ability to bring diverse groups of people together to achieve ambitious goals.
